XVI SOBRAMFA Congress 2012

In an wonderful atmosphere combined with the nice environment provided by the city of Campos do Jordao, São Paulo state,happened the XVI Congress of SOBRAMFA

SOBRAMFA meeting was attended by students from various medical schools of Brazil, doctors, health professionals and also some international guests from USA, South Africa and Colombia.

Opening ceremony: Marco Aurélio Janaudis, General Secretary of SOBRAMFA opened the meeting relating SOBRAMFA history and pointed out what nowadays are the main SOBRAMFA core values: Medical Education and Humanism.

Narrative session: a very special moment on Friday night. Fireplace, hot chocolate and the opportunity to share patients’ stories and our own stories as well.

Scholastic poster sessions were an excellent opportunity for medical students to present and learn how to be part of the meeting. Here we highlight the quality and variety of subjects chosen as “Project Street Voices” “Fibromyalgia and quality of life”, “Palliative Care and Oncology Patients,” among many others.

Jerry Sayre MD, family doctor and Professor at Mayo Clinic, guide a workshop about how doctors can improve communication skills with patients.

Dr. Camilo Osorio, Dean of La Sabana University Medical School, , pronounce a lecture on practical leadership. He took the example of two catastrophic floods in their university campus and how they recovered and renewed from this challenge.Professor Osorio pointed out how we can deal with difficulties transforming them into opportunities and also stressed clearly that what makes an institution is not the physical structure but people: teachers and students.

Dr. Charles Chouler, doctor and professor in Cape Town, South Africa, offered us much reflection on the life of the doctor, through marvelous examples. .

Dr. Sandra Milena Espitia, a Colombian family doctor, who attended several SOBRAMFA Meetings showed how SOBRAMFA ideas are really innovative, and how she is using them for projects she leads along with PAHO (Pan American Health Organization)
